His continued concealment was noticed by neighbors some days ago, and when a search party entered the house, they found him lying on a bed of straw, on the floor, well nigh dead from disease and hunger, and Supervisor Gates being notified, he provided care, etc., until Green died. He was known to be an eccentric character, but some peculiarities have come to light since his death, which were never known before. He was a bachelor, thought to be about 55 years old; an old soldier, but not a Grand Army man – society was not one of his diversions. He had accumulated considerable property, owning a fine farm of 183 acres, which was well stocked; on his place was a large barn, which is filled with hay and grain – perhaps a thousand bushels of the latter. And with all this wealth and property, which he lavished upon comforts for his beasts, he had none for himself; there was not even a bed in the house upon which he could stretch his wearied self, and when search was instituted to find something in the nature of bed clothing to use during his last sickness, not a vestige could be found. He had for many years been a resident of Berlin, and while his habits were not generally known, he was known to be pecuniarily well- to-do, and his mode of living, as now revealed, has astonished the natives. He has before called Supervisor Gates to his aid in business transactions, and refusing to execute a will or last testament, at the solicitation of a number of creditors during Green’s last illness, Mr. Gates has taken temporary charge of the property. Green has been heard to refer to brothers and sisters, but he never “gave away” their whereabouts, as he wanted them “to have a good fight over the property when he died.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/g/green14999nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
