Another Article: Thursday, January 25, 2001 A 71-year-old man died after injuries sustained in an automobile collision on Wednesday at approximately 3:25 p.m. on North State Road, south of Long Lake Road. James H. Green, 71, of Sheridan was driving a 1987 Ford pickup, when he crossed the centerline and sideswiped a Waste Management Garbage Truck. The garbage truck was driven by John Ekholm, 31, of Greenville with his passenger Gary Bishop, 29, of Palo. The garbage truck went off the side of the road and overturned, while the pickup remained in the roadway. Green was pinned in his pickup and was pronounced dead at the scene. Ekholm and Bishop were transported to United Memorial Hospital in Greenville with minor injuries. According to witness statements, Green may have had a medical problem or fallen asleep. Drugs and alcohol don’t seem to be a factor in the crash. Green was wearing his seat belt, but Ekholm and Bishop were not. The accident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff Department. The Ionia County Sheriff Department was assisted by Life Ambulance, Belding Ambulance, Orleans Township Fire Department, Ronald Township Fire Department, Belding Fire Department, Reed and Hoppes Towing, Aeromed Helicopter and Ionia County Victims Advocates.
