Martin Greenwalt was born in Washington county, Maryland, October 15, 1843, where he lived until the war broke out, and enlisted in Company F, Third Regiment of Maryland infantry. He was captured September 15, 1862, at Harper’s Ferry and was held in parole for three months, when he was exchanged, and was discharged from service May 29, 1865. He came to Michigan in 1868 and for over 50 years has been a resident of Palo and vicinity, following his trade of stone mason and plastering, of which he was classed as the best in the country. He was a man of quiet ways, and commanded the respect of all of his associates. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church of which he was a member Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. McGinnis, of Kent City, a former pastor. Members of the I.O.O.F. order of which he was also a member attended in a body. As the procession marched to the cemetery, the stars and stripes which the departed carried for many years on all patriotic occasions was carried by one of our World war boys. With the passing away of Mr. Greenwalt, only three of our boys of “1861” are left in our village, only one of which was able to attend the services, at which time he was given a seat of honor.
