GREGORY Russell C. Gregory of Ionia died Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Veteran's Home in Grand Rapids. He was born March 2, 1931 near Portland. MI, the eldest to Donald and Marion Jones Gregory. He attended Gibbs School and was graduated in 1945. He was an alumnus of Ionia High School (1949) and the University of Michigan (BA 1953) cum laude. After Ann Arbor, he spent two years serving as an instructor in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky. As a young man, he worked for Fred Kidd Sr. and Fred Kidd Jr. at the Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard and for Louise Black at Black's Midway. After serving his country, her returned to Ann Arbor where he worked for the University of Michigan. He was instrumental in selecting, cataloging and organizing what was then the new undergraduate library. He then began a career managing book stores in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. Additionally, he served as a guest lecturer at both Michigan and Eastern Michigan University, tutored many U of M. athletes, and edited many dissertations for Ph.D. candidates. He was a distinguished authority on local history, architecture, and the civil War; particularly general James Harvey Kidd, whites Covered Bridge, and Hall-Fowler Memorial Library, among others. His writings are well documented in the Sentinel-Standard archives.He returner to Ionia in the mid-1970's and was the managing editor at the Ionia Daily Sentinel-Standard for over two decades. Preceding him in death were a brother, Lawrence Gregory; a sister Lois Martens; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Gregory. Surviving are his siblings; Carol Jean (Steve) Price, Jerry (Judy) Gregory, Norma (Bob) Mulder, Perry (Margaret) Gregory, Richard Gregory. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Carol Gregory, Brother-in-law, Ronald Martens, two cousins, Robert (Diana) Jones, Ruth Marie Gochnour, step-sister, Janet (Larry) Listerman, and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. No funeral services will be held. At his request, a family memorial service will be held at a later date.
