He was born July 23, 1910, in Berlin Township, the son of Arthur D. and Lois Winegar Gregory, and attended Benedict School. He joined his father in farming, first in Berlin and later in Orange Township. Still later, he was a construction worker, especially noted for form-building and finish carpentry. He was married Oct. 4, 1930, to Marion G. Jones of Portland. She died in February 1983. He was married to Mary Stout Thomas June 7, 1983. She died in May 2006. Also preceding him in death were two brothers and a sister. He was a member of LeValley United Methodist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of Ionia Fishing and Hunting Club, and served as the club's president and treasurer. He was a life member of National Rifle Association, Loyal Order of the Moose, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a longtime member of Portland and Berlin Center Granges. He was a loyal Democrat. He served in the U. S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, in the Pacific, during World War II. Survivors include eight children: Russell C. of Ionia; Larry (Carol) of Ionia; Lois (Ronald) Martens of Fulton; Carol (Steven) Price of Lake Odessa; Jerry (Judy) of Ionia; Norma (Robert) Mulder of Lake view; Perry (Margaret) of Ionia; and Richard (Marilyn) of Stanton; and step-daughter, Janet (Larry) Listerman of Ionia. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. No funeral services will be held. At his request, a family memorial service will be held in the spring. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. He was especially pleased by an honorary Ionia High School diploma, awarded in 2003.
