He was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Owosso, the son of Ray I. and Mollie (Baker) Griswold, publishers of the former Portland Observer newspaper from 1920 until the death of Ray Griswold in 1938. At the time of his father’s death, Eugene assumed the business, continuing publication of the newspaper until 1940. He went on to marry Anna Lukas on Sept. 16, 1944. Following his discharge from the armed forced in 1946, he accepted a position in the advertising department of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard, leaving in 1955 to devote himself to other interests which included editorship of the Mt. Pleasant Michigan Times-News. He returned to Ionia in 1960 and resuming a position at the Ionia Sentinel- Standard advertising department until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Griswold was a charter member of the Michigan Society of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America serving the society as governor, deputy governor and secretary treasurer from 1993 through 1999. He is survived by his wife, Anna Griswold of Ionia; son, Gary (Ann) Griswold of Caledonia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eleanor A. Titcomb and Barbara B. Ransom. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were made by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
