I. Griswold, wife of the late Ray I. Griswold, editor and publisher of the former Portland Observer. Interment will be at the family lot in Portland cemetery. Death came Tuesday to Mrs. Griswold at the age of 72, following a stroke suffered in March of 1952, since which time she had been a patient at the Ionia Convalescent Home. Born Molly Gertrude Baker, Aug. 4, 1879 at Saginaw, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. S. Eugene Baker, she was a life time resident of Michigan. On October 6, 1905 she was united in marriage to Ray I. Griswold, to which union were born three children, Eleanor (Mrs. G. P. Titcomb) Churchville, Maryland, Barbara (Mrs. R. Gordon Ransom) and Eugene F. Griswold, of Ionia. In 1921 she settled with her husband and family in Portland, and during the ensuing 20 years participated in the editing and publishing of the Portland Observer, a weekly newspaper formerly published in the village. A column which she originated and published weekly as “Mollie’s Monologue” gained wide recognition and was the fulfillment of an ambition gleaned from a near-lifetime in the newspaper business. Following the death of her husband in 1938, and the subsequent sale of the family business, Mrs. Griswold engaged as personal companion, and during the following years widely traveled the United States. She was a member of the Portland Methodist church and Ladies’ Literary club of Portland. Surviving, besides the son and daughters, are four grandchildren, and a brother, Merritt B. Wilson, of Marquette, Mich. Rev. Keith Avery of Portland Methodist church will officiate at services. The family will be at the funeral home Thursday evening between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. to receive callers. Casket bearers will be Jay Clark, Floyd C. Rice, Walter F. Ingraham, Oliver Tschopp, Dan Watson and Ray Barnard.
