Warren E. Brown read last rites for Ray I. Griswold, publisher of the Observer, at his home on Grant street. Following an illness of nine months, during which time his health had rapidly failed, Mr. Griswold succumbed at 10:30 o’clock Sunday evening. He had been forced to retire from work on the newspaper in July of last year, and had been confined to his home most of the time since then. Pallbearers were Leo C. Lehman, Chester Blanchard, Dr. S. A. Horning, A. J. Barton, B. W. Jackson and Frank L. Jenkins. Burial was in the Portland cemetery. Born in Chesaning July 30, 1872, he had spent his early years there and in St. Charles. Later the family moved to Ithaca, where he was associated with an older brother, Fred W., in publishing the Gratiot County Journal. He continued in this work on the Owosso Argus, and later at Calumet, where he was branch manager of the Houghton County Journal. On Oct. 6, 1905 he married Mollie Lincoln Brewer, of Jackson, and the couple lived in Ithaca for several years. To this union were born three children, Eleanor, Eugene, and Barbara. The family moved to Portland in 1921, and Mr. Griswold took over the publication of the Observer, then in its fifty-third year, from Arthur L. Francis, who moved to Lansing to establish the Lansing Capital News. Surviving are the wife, Mollie; two daughters, Eleanor and Barbara; a son, Eugene, and two brothers, Fred. W. Griswold, of Bath Mich., and Charles Griswold, of Jackson, Mich. Among friends from out-of-town who attended the funeral services were: Ralph McNitt, Frank Dellopaugh, Mrs. Muriel Monger, Elmer Keldsen, and Kent Nelson, of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Paul E. Bailey, of Grand Ledge; Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Hirleman, of Battle Creek; Riley Baum, of Jackson, and Hiram Johnson, recently retired publisher of the Advertiser at Saranac.
