He suffered an apparent heart attack. He was born at Muskegon, March 3, 1905, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Groendyk. In 1920 he enlisted in the Army when 15 and served until his discharge as a master sergeant June 10, 1954. During his service career he served in World War I, World War II and also the Korean conflict. July 12, 1932, he was married at Sault Ste. Marie to Nora Weston and moved to Ionia in 1953. He was employed at Michigan Reformatory in Ionia 14 years retiring in 1967. He was a member of Zion Lutheran church of Woodland. Surviving are his wife, Nora; a son, Rhiner E. of Las Animas, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothyann McMasters of Saranac, Mrs. Opal Lee Sweet of Saranac; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Doris Sturgeon of Muskegon, Mrs. Dena Dean of Saranac, Mrs. Anna Ordway of Grand Haven. Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Morris-Roetman funeral home of Saranac with full military honors. Rev. Randall Metz of Zion Lutheran church of Woodland will officiate and interment will be at Saranac cemetery. A memorial has been established for the heart fund and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
