Ionia Standard, 6 Dec 1889

Uncle Sidney Groff died at his residence on the State road, Wednesday night.  
He had been in poor health for several years, but during the past month, has 
been confined to his house and bed.  Funeral will be attended this afternoon, 
and will be under the care of Ionia lodge I.O.O.F., of which order he was an 
honored and respected member.  Mr. Groff was 75 years of age.  He was in every 
sense a good citizen, conscientious and upright.

Mr. Groff was born at Hacketstown, Warren county, N. J., June 22, 1814; was 
married to Maria Tomkins, at Middleport, N. Y., March 9, 1837; removed from 
thence in 1840 to Kingsville, Ohio, remaining in Ashtabula county until 1865, 
when he removed to this city where, for nearly a quarter of a century, he has 
been a familiar figure on our streets.

He was one of the charter members of the Ionia Lodge of Odd Fellows and has 
been a devoted member of the order and of the lodge ever since.
