Groom, age 81, of Ionia, passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 30, 2005, at home under the loving care of his family and Hospice. He was born on Oct. 17, 1923, in Smyrna, the son of Charles and Lovina Weaver Groom. Bird was a custodian with Central Montcalm Schools, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the VFW Post 5065 of Sheridan and a member of Shiloh Community Church. Bird proudly served his country during World War II, serving in the United States Army. He was proud to have passed a legacy of service to your country onto his children and grandchildren: Bill, Jeff, Gary, and Nick that have and are currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, Robert currently serving in the U.S. Coast Guard and Lindsey currently serving in the U.S. Army. Bird was married Aug. 21, 1948, in Ionia to Iris Wiles and she survives along with their children; Bruce Groom of Edmore, Bill (Ellie) Groom of Orleans, and Dan and Mary Groom of Fenwick; grandchildren Gary (Charity) Groom, Jeff (Kelley) Groom, Nick (Lindsey) Groom, Sara Groom and Robert Groom; great- grandchildren Gabrielle, Micah, Seth, Ethan, Erin and Abby; special friends Gerald and Betty Hecht and Greg Shurlow; and many nieces and nephews. Bird was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters Viola, Mercie, Minnie and Nemma; and three brothers Clarence, Ernie and Charles. Funeral and committal services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Community Church with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shiloh Community Church. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice or the Hoe-Down Hoggs 4-H Club. Envelopes will be available at the church. Funeral services were entrusted to Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, 203 Pleasant St., Belding.
