April 10, (illegible), and departed this life Feb. 27, 1899. He moved with his parents to this state in 1834 while Michigan was yet a territory and settled in Eagle, Clinton county. His early life was spent in helping to clear away the dense forest which was then characteristic of Michigan and in helping to make roads through the woods. He also spent some time in teaching school in the county in which he lived. He was married to Miss Caroline McCrumb Oct. 13, 1850, with whom he was permitted to live for a period of over 48 years. After marriage they settled upon a farm in Eagle township, moving from that place to the village of Portland 22 years ago. He has for many years been identified with the M. E. church and was a consistent member until his death. During his many years residence in this vicinity he has been known as an honest, upright, kind hearted man and consistent Christian. Two orphan children were given a home under his roof. He leaves a widow, two brothers and an adopted daughter and many friends to mourn his loss.
