He was born in Breaslau, Germany on December 10, 1917. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 52 years Evelyn, and an infant son Bernard Frederick Jr. He is survived by his daughter Shirley Savage of Largo, FL; two grandsons James and Vicki Savage of Venice, FL; and Jeffery and Heather Savage of Kentwood, MI; 8 great-grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews. He served in the US Navy during the Second World War and the Korean Conflict. He was an Eagle Scout as a teenager in Port Huron, MI. He was employed at the Michigan State Reformatory in Ionia, MI for 38 years in Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. He was a life member of Belding/Ionia F&AM, Royal Arch Masons of Lowell, Grand Valley Consistory, De Molai Commandry of Grand Rapids, Saladin Shrine of Grand Rapids, Saladin Legion of Honor, Saladin Unit Council, White Shrine of Ionia, Belding Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and a Past Associate Grand Guardian of Job's Daughter's of Michigan, State Employees Retirement Association of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4646, American Legion of Belding, Lesky-Dulek Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, and Project Liberty Ship. He served as the Veterans Service Officer for Ionia County. He loved boating and for many years had a Cabin Cruiser ported in Saugatuck, MI. He was a graduate of Montcalm Community College's Culinary Arts Program and organized dinners for the Masonic Lodges in Ionia and Saladin Temple in Grand Rapids for many years. He and his wife Evelyn enjoyed traveling the world. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia with Rev. Paul Bailey presiding. The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Saladin Temple Crippled Children's Foundation.
