Guilford, 20 Years Old, Succumbed to Disease Wednesday. Howard C. Guilford, a young man who had lately been in the employ of Dr. T. K. Brown, driving his automobile during the rush of work caused by the epidemic of influenza, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Guilford, in Danby, Wednesday forenoon. He had been ill about 10 days of pneumonia. The turning point of the disease had been reached two days before his death and there were strong hopes that he could survive, but he grew worse Tuesday. Miss Frances Dickson, a trained nurse, attended him and every effort was made against a fatal ending of his illness. Howard was born on the Guilford farm in Danby July 24th, 1898, and after finishing his school work helped his father on the farm until last July, when he came to the village to work in Jackson’s garage. A few weeks ago he went north on a hunting trip and on his return entered Dr. Brown’s employ. He was a young man of excellent habits and had many friends. He is survived by his parents and a brother, Harold. Funeral services were held at the home Friday and the remains were laid away in Danby cemetery. ---- Unidentified Publication … of a severe attack of pneumonia, following the “flu,” Howard C. Guilford, one of the best known and best liked young men of the community, passed away at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey D. Guilford, in Danby, at about 11:00 o’clock Wednesday morning. Many hearts are sad as a result of his untimely demise. He had been extremely ill since a week ago last Saturday evening, and although his life had been hanging by a tiny thread for several days, his death was a depressing shock to all of his acquaintances. Mr. Guilford was a little more than 20 years of age at the time of his death having been born July 24, 1898, on the same farm where he died. After completing the course of study at the Section school, in Danby, he attended school in Portland for a couple of years, and then went back to the farm to assist his father. He remained at home steadily until last July, when he came to the village and entered the employ of B.W. Jackson as a mechanic, since which time he had worked in both of the local garages. For a week or so preceding his death he had been driving for Dr. T. K. Brown, and being subject to more or less exposure, undoubtedly contracted the cold at that time which developed into influenza, then pneumonia, and then death. Only a couple of weeks ago he returned from a deer hunting trip in the upper peninsula. Mr. Guilford was tenderly cared for during his illness by Miss Frances Dickson, a trained nurse, and every thing that human hands and medical skill could do was done to save him. His power of resistance, however, was weak from the start. Surviving the young man are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey D. Guilford, who are heartbroken with grief over the sad affair, a brother, Harold Guilford, and two grandmothers, Mrs. Dennis J. Guilford, of Danby, and Mrs. Charles H. Gilden, of Portland. Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, at the house, is the hour set for the funeral service. Rev. J.M. DeVetter, of the Baptist church, will preach the funeral sermon and Rev. T.F. Galt, of the Congregational church, will offer prayer. The remains will be buried on the Guilford family lot, in Danby cemetery.
