The Ionia Daily Sentinel, Monday, November 20, 1916
George Gundrum, veteran druggist and former mayor of Ionia, died at his home, 
West Main street, at 2:45 Saturday afternoon after a short illness.  Funeral 
services will be held at the Methodist Episcopal church of which he was a long 
time member and one of the board of trustees, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 
o’clock, Rev. M. L. Fox of Lansing and Rev. C. E. Hoag of this city 
officiating.  Interment will be in Highland Park.  The bearers will be Dr. J. 
J. Defendorf, Levi Marshall, R. A. Hawley, H. P. Voelker, T. B. Preston, W. B. 
Heath.  The Methodist choir will sing.

Deceased was born in Pirmasena, Bavaria, Germany January 20, 1842.  With his 
parents and brother and sisters he came to this country in 1854, and settled 
at Stewartsville, Indiana, where he attended school.  After the death of his 
father in 1862 he was employed as clerk in stores in South Bend and later at 
Evansville, devoting his spare time to the study of chemistry and pharmacy.

In 1870 Mr. Gundrum came to Ionia and with his brothers, Godfrey and 
Frederick, opened a drug store.  He afterward took several courses in this 
subject at the University of Michigan graduating with high honors in 1876.  
After his brother Godfrey retired from the business George bought his brother 
Frederick’s share and for many years was sole proprietor of the store, at that 
time one of the largest in the county.  Mr. Gundrum retired from active 
business some years ago, the management of the store being taken over by L. H. 
Morgenthaler.

Mr. Gundrum served as secretary of the Michigan state board of pharmacy and 
besides his active work in the drug business, he was widely known as a 
botanist and ornithologist in which he kept up an active interest.

Deceased was widely known and universally loved and respected by all who knew 
him, a kind, genial friend, and an upright citizen of the community.  In 1893 
after a lively campaign and a close contest he was elected mayor of Ionia by a 
majority of 3 over his opponent Geo. E. Nichols.  He served his city 
conscientiously and well, and also was city treasurer previous to that for one 
term.

Although not in active business for several years before his death and had 
been in poor health for some time, Mr. Gundrum was able to be around until but 
a few days before his death, which is mourned by his many friends.  Deceased 
was married in 1877 to Miss Kate McPherson who is the only immediate survivor.
