Church, Where Young Man Attended Clarence Haas, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Haas of East Lincoln avenue, just outside the city limits of Ionia, was electrocuted while in the act of transferring wires from the old dining room to the new structure. He had been in the employ of the construction department of the institution for about 14 months. Two physicians were called to the scene immediately following the tragedy in an effort to save the boy’s life. But the efforts of Dr. W.B. Huntley and Dr. R.R. Whitten were futile. Life left the body a few minutes after the contact. It is believed that about 480 volts passed through the young man’s body. Coroner Joe Boynton and Sheriff Henry cook were then called to the scene. A jury was at once impaneled, consisting of Henry Bowersox, F.H. Hamilton, Alfred Nichols, Carl Bradner, and C.R. Probasco. The jurists viewed the surroundings of the tragedy scene and adjourned to a later date. It is stated that Mr. Haas had cut off some wires and had gone to the box to pull out the plugs and was not aware of live wires there, which he grabbed a hold on, causing his death. Some believe that he had one foot in the water at that time, but the shoes displayed no signs of being wet, other than the dampness from walking about on the ground. Prior to Mr. Haas’ employment at the reformatory, he was employed by the Ionia Water Power and Electric company. He was a capable electrician and known to be careful and conscientious in his handling of the wires. The funeral will be held from the Methodist church of Ionia on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. C.J. Kruse, pastor of the church, will have charge of the service. As Mr. Haas was a member of the Methodist church, he was quite popular in a large circle of friends. The funeral will be attended by many folks. The young man is survived by a father and a mother, six brothers, Carl of Sperling, Manitoba, William of Columbus, Ohio, Emil of Ionia, John of Fullerton, California, Roy of Grand Rapids and George, who lives at home, and two sisters, Mrs. George Young of Ionia and Mrs. Dora Hall of Santiago, California.
