DOD: Thursday, 10 December 1953 Herman F. Hacker, 72, a resident of Ionia for more than 60 years, died at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital at 6 o’clock Thursday morning after a short illness. Mr. Hacker would have been 73 on December 31. Funeral services will be held at St. John Lutheran church on North Jefferson Street Saturday, Dec. 12 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, from the Boynton funeral home on north Rich street. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Surviving him are his wife, Helena; one daughter, Mrs. Esther Slowinski, of Lansing; one son Donald, of Det4roit; a brother, Emil Hacker of South Haven; four grandchildren, four nephews and four nieces. Mr. Hacker was born in Germany December 31, 1880, and came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hacker, when he was four years of age. Within a few years the family moved to Ionia. In 1904 he was married in Ionia to Miss Helena Steinke. He was active in his church, St. John Lutheran on North Jefferson Street, all his life, and had served it as secretary and elder for many years. From 1905 to 1909 he served as treasurer of Ionia Township. From 1909 to 1911 he was in the grocery business with Victor B. Wheaton at north Jackson Street and Lincoln Avenue and from 1911 to 1914 he was employed in the men’s clothing department of the Thomas A. Carten store. In 1914 he bought the grocery at East Main and Jackson streets which he conducted until he went with the Ionia Pottery Company for which he was traveling salesman for 33 years. His territory included the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania. He retired in 1947.
