Haight, Sr., 84-year old retired Ionia city post office carrier, died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Blodgett Memorial hospital in Grand Rapids after an illness which began last fall. Mr. Haight retired as an active United States postal city carrier in 1936, 26 years after he had started work. Ill since last November he had been confined to his home, Blodgett and Ionia hospital, and had lived for a few months at Pilgrim Manor near Grand Rapids before his last illness two weeks ago. Born March 23, 1879 northeast of Ionia, he attended country schools and when a student in the Ionia city schools walked to and from class from the family farm. He left school before finishing to assist his father in an Ionia livery business and worked there until he accepted a position as a substitute clerk in the Ionia city post office in 1902. He continued as a postal employee until his retirement an during that time became a regular city carrier. He retired in 1936 because of disability. He was married August 7, 1906 at Stanton to Annita Fanning of Stanton and the couple moved to Ionia making their home on Lovell place. Mrs. Haight died January 24, 1923 and he never remarried. Always active in his church, the First Methodist of Ionia, he devoted many hours to church work, particularly among its young people before and following his retirement. He kept active during his retirement with church and other community activities. He formed and directed a Sunday school orchestra and later directed the church choir. He had a splendid voice and was called upon to sing frequently. His friends were numbered among the many hundreds of young people within the church and in Ionia city. For many years he served as city school census enumerator. Mr. Haight was one of the first to accept chairmanship of the finance drive of the Ionia Community Chest and his work that year led the chest to far exceed its goal. He kept active at home where he lived alone during more recent years. He cared for his own yard and that of his son’s, Dr. Chandler Haight, Jr., and aided in caring for that office. He took part in numerous organizational activities, many of which no longer function. He was a member of a large family of nine children of which only Mrs. Frank Hoar of Terrace court, a sister, now survives. Other survivors are his three children, William E. of Lansing, Dr. Chandler Haight, Jr., Ionia dentist; and a daughter, Mrs. W. H. Gist of Lafayette, Ind.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Helen McCann of Ionia. Until her marriage to Dr. J. J. McCann, Mrs. McCann made her home at the Haight residence and assisted in bringing up Mr. Haight’s family. Funeral services are to be at the First Methodist church Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the family lot at Highland Park cemetery in Ionia township. A memorial for the Methodist church has been established.
