Fred was born to Harold and Esther Haight. He was preceded in death by his parents; older brother, George; and brothers-in- law, Larry Peirce and Dr. Murray Koorhan. Fred is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy (Peirce) Haight. He is also survived by his two daughters, Robin Haight Robinson and Wendy Haight, and two grandchildren, Matt Robinson (fiancée’) Amanda Solomon and Erin Robinson; brother, Wallace (Carol) Haight of Hartford; sisters, Camilla (Martin) Diebold of Harford and Shirley Koorhan of Mason, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. Fred served in the Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He started his own business, Fred Hiaght Insurance Agency, in 1965 at a card table in his dining room. It grew to employ three agents and several office assistants by the time he retired in 1992. Fred thoroughly enjoyed his profession, and loved his morning coffee chats with the area farmers. He was also and Eagle Scout and very proud of that accomplishment. Fred and Nancy were avid travelers, visiting many countries over the years. They enjoyed collecting souvenirs, which they used to decorate their sunroom. Fred dearly loved high school sports, and with his partner Larry Dowsett, filmed the Ionia High School football games for 31 years. He loved woodworking in his shop, and was a great fan of the Detroit Tigers. Fred was an active member of the Ionia Masonic Blue Lodge for 60 years, serving as Worshipful Master five times. Fred adored his two grandchildren, Matt and Erin, and was so proud of all their accomplishments. He enjoyed watching them play sports and hearing about all their adventures. When Erin went to South Korea to teach, he gave her several tips and taught her some Korean phrases. Matt is currently in active duty Army Specialist in training for deployment, and his grandpa was extremely proud of him. Fred thoroughly enjoyed life and was a friend to everyone he met. He taught his family to live life with joy and not to “sweat the small stuff”. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the First United Methodist church in Ionia with Rev. Larry Brown officiating. Visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 3, with masonic services following.
