Ionia Weekly Standard, 5 Apr 1895

Word was received yesterday afternoon from Thomasville, Georgia, announcing the 
death of Miss Clara Hale.  Until very lately, both Miss Hale and Miss Roof were 
reported as improving in health, and the sudden change in Miss Clara’s case was 
a great shock to our whole village, and will be a surprise to her many Ionia 
friends.  The remains are expected to reach here Friday p.m.  Miss Hale, only 
child of John Hale and wife (nee Nellie Roof) was born in Lyons 18 years ago, 
graduated from our schools last year, and socially was one of the bright lights 
of our village.  For the past year she has been in feeble health, and in 
February last, in company with her parents and her aunt, Miss Artha Roof, she 
went south in hopes and full expectations of regaining her lost health.  Up to 
within a few days reports were to the effect that she was slowly improving, and 
the unexpected announcement yesterday has thrown a gloom over our entire 
village.
