Hale, a young married man, 26 years of age, committed suicide by hanging. He was a son of Belding Hale, who lives about one mile west of the Center, and like his father, was highly esteemed. The reason for his desperate act, which resulted so disastrously, seems to have been very slight, and it would seem as though he must have been deranged mentally for the time being. He was married less than a year ago, his wife’s people living in Lansing. They wrote and asked her to visit them and it seems he thought he had been slighted. Going out to the barn under pretense to do the milking, he hung himself in the carriage shed with a halter strap. He was not dead when discovered by his wife, but in her excitement she ran for help and before it arrived was too late. The loop did not slip down tight, but simply held under his chin, and over the top of his head, so that it would seem as though he could easily have released himself if he had so desired, even after taking the step. The wife and father, as well as the relatives, are heartbroken over the sad occurrence. The young man was at work for the elder Mr. Hale, and only a few weeks ago helped to bury a cousin at Orleans center. It is indeed a sad affair.
