Genial, companionable, jolly “Jack” Hale was of English parentage, being born at Halford, Warwickshire, England, November 6, 1839. In 1853 he came to America, joining an elder brother, Jonathan Hale, who was in business at that time at Drayton Plains. In 1865 he entered into partnership with his brother, and they operated a grist mill at Rochester, that plant being destroyed by fire the following year. They came thence to Lyon in 1867, and bought the Lyons mill, which they conducted under the firm name of Hale Bros. until 1896, when he sold his interest to the sons of Jonathan Hale, who are now continuing the long established business at the fine new mill recently built at Ionia. Mr. Hale was married to Helen Keeler at Pontiac in 1862, Mrs. Hale passing away in 1875. To this union was born three children: Herbert, who died in infancy; Fred, now a resident of Jackson, and Elizabeth Gridley, who has assisted in the care of her father during his recent illness. In 1876 he was married to Nellie Roof, who survives. To them was born a daughter, Clara, who died in 1895. Mr. Hale also leaves a sister, Mrs. Hannah Eilenburg of Muir. Deceased was a member of Lyons lodge No. 37, F. & A. M., and of Lyons Chapter R. A. M., having been secretary of the latter for two years prior to his death. He was a man who made friends easily, as is attested by his election at various times to the offices of township supervisor and treasurer, and treasurer of the village. Deceased was of a genial nature and will be missed, not only by his immediate family, but by those with whom he came in contact. He was a good man for his community, a real helper to the needy in time of trouble or distress.
