Hale, 64, Ionia city engineer since 1919 and one of Michigan’s best known millers, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday in an ambulance en route to a Grand Rapids hospital. Mr. Hale, ill with a heart ailment since last January 6 and bedridden since that time, was fatally stricken at 1 a.m. Monday at his home on East Washington street after returning from Blodgett hospital at 4 p.m. Saturday. Accompanied by Dr. Peter Trinca, Ionia physician and surgeon, Mr. Hale was taken by ambulance from his home en route to Grand Rapids but he died in the ambulance near the Ionia county park west of Ionia. Mr. Hale, although in ill health for the past two years, became seriously ill in January and was confined to his bed at home for weeks until his removal to Grand Rapids more than a month ago. He was brought home from the hospital Saturday afternoon as vastly improved and had expected to remain home to complete his recovery. Mr. Hale, who was affectionately called “Cap” and “Stub” by his friends, was born July 8, 1888 in Lyons, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hale. He attended the Lyons public schools through high school and was graduated from Lyons high school. He entered the University of Michigan and was graduated as a civil engineer in 1911. He returned to his home in Lyons and became a surveyor and also became associated with his father in the Jonathan Hale and Son milling firm. With the outbreak of the first World War he entered service and rose in rank to Captain in the Air Force. He was first stationed at Fort Sheridan and then Roosevelt Field, Langley Field, Morrison Virginia; and Carlstrom Field, Florida. He was mustered out in April 1919, and returned to take active part in the milling business with his father and his uncle, Elmer D. Hale, who died in 1924. In 1917, while still in service, Mr. Hale was married to Miss Cleo Grove of Lyons, and upon his return from service they moved to the home in which they have since lived for 34 years. Mr. and Mrs. Hale had one daughter, Audrienne, who is now Mrs. Ernest Andres of Ionia. Mr. and Mrs. Andres have a daughter, Audrienne Ann. While a resident of Ionia Mr. Hale was active in virtually all types of civic and fraternal organizations. He served as commander of the Ionia American Legion, as exalted ruler of the Elks, as chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. In addition to his duties as city engineer and building inspector, Mr. Hale served as a member of the Ionia district board of education for many years; as a director of the Ionia County National Bank of Ionia, president of the Michigan Miller’s association. He was a life member of the Ionia Elks, was chairman of the Ionia county chapter of the American Red Cross for many years, a former director of the Ionia Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Ionia Country club, was recently elected to honorary membership in the Ionia Rotary club to which he had belonged for years, and served as a member of the planning committee of the new Ionia County Memorial hospital. Surviving besides his wife is his daughter, Mrs. Ernest Andres, and granddaughter, Audrienne Ann Andres, of Ionia; two sisters, Mrs. George Willard of Ann Arbor and Mrs. John Cranston of Ironton, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted from the St. Johns Episcopal church in Ionia at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Mr. Hale has been a longtime member of that church. The Rev. John Carlton of Niles, formerly of Ionia, will conduct the service. Burial will be in the family lot at Lyons cemetery. Subsequent Publication: Tuesday, April 29, 1952 The family of Laurence I. Hale, president and treasurer of Jonathan Hale and sons who died early Monday morning in an ambulance en route to a Grand Rapids hospital, will be at the Boynton funeral home from 7 to 9 pm. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings to receive friends. The body will be at the funeral home until shortly before the time of funeral services Thursday when it will be removed to St. John’s Episcopal church. Services will be held at the church Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Fr. John G. Carlton of Niles, former rector of the Ionia church. Burial will be in Lyons cemetery.
