Dr. Robert Martin was called but the child was so badly burned that recovery was impossible and she died a few hours later. Mrs. Halford had gone out in the yard leaving the two little children in the house. On her return flames were issuing from the cab. Eric Smith happened to be close by and he snatched the baby from the cab and tore the burning clothing from its body, but not until the flames had done their fatal work. It is the supposition that the brother, who is but two years old, had been playing with matches and that he held a match in his fingers until it burned them, and then threw it in the direction of the cab. Mr. Halford resided in the village until a year or so ago and now lives on the Hubbard Pline farm, east of Maple corners. Funeral services were held at Lyons Saturday, where burial was also made. – Portland Review.
