Hall, tells us of the disposal of their mortal remains, which he and Mrs. Hall who passed away on Saturday, December 21st, had agreed upon some time ago and which they had, in messages to their children, asked to be carried out. Mr. Hall writes: “Both having resigned to the fact that one of us was quite liable to leave without notice, some 60 days ago, we both signed requests to our children that when the end did come, we were to be immediately cremated without services of any kind and when both vases had been returned, the ashes were to be mixed and scattered among the trees, shrubs and flowers we had loved so long.” With the request to each one of the children Mr. Hall sent the following eulogy to “Mother.” “Did I not know that for some time, due to flagging functions, our loved one had longed for this hour, I could not fulfill an obligation to her which she so richly merits. “This is not, should not be, a time for grief — rather a time for a high degree of appreciation for efficient services rendered. When one has lived four score or more of years, and has met every demand made upon them with a high degree of efficiency, and in passing has suffered a minimum of pain, we should be thankful for the passing — the inevitable result of the fundamental laws of Nature. ‘That death is but the sequel of life.’ Nature in all its various forms of life absolutely confirms this statement. In this urn are the ashes of a mother — honest, efficient, loyal, faithful — to husband, children, friend — all majors in a real Christian character — the highest type of true womanhood. “No career from any angle in any degree approaches the career of an honest, efficient, willing mother. ‘Of such is the kingdom of heaven on earth.’ The crying need of the hour in this troubled world is more such mothers. The good they have done will live as long as memory lasts. So why should we weep? Miss her? Yes, far beyond any mental concept. “Addie L. Hoppough was born on June 23, 1863, in the township of Canadice, Ontario county, New York. Moved with her parents at one year of age to their farm in the township of Otisco, Ionia county Mich. Attended district and high school and on the 12th day of July, 1883, we were married at the 50th anniversary of Father and Mother Hoppough. To us three children were born: Decker B. Hall, now of Oak Park, Ill.; Mrs. W.W. Kephart, now of Silver Springs, Md. and Mrs. Fred G. Langville, now of Addison township, DuPage county, Ill. At 20 months of age we adopted Merritt N. Hall, now of Portland township, Ionia county, Mich. At the death of D.B.’s wife, for some time she took over the care of Kenneth Pat Hall, our oldest grandson, Oak Park, Ill. To both Kenneth and Merritt, she gave the same tender care and motherly love that she gave to her own. Besides the above she leaves four in-laws, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. All of the above now living would willingly vouch for all the good accomplished by this loving wife and mother through life. So to one of the sweetest wives and mothers that ever lived, I am sure she would most willingly respond to the following lines of Tennyson: ‘Sun set and evening star, And one clear call for me. And may there be no moaning at the bar. When I put out to sea.’ “As a finale, we would respond to the following lines of an author unknown: “Grand, noble soul, the world has ever known – She lived for all, not self alone. Of those who grace the halls of fame, We find no more beloved name, than mother.’” Memorial services have been arranged for to be held at some future date in accordance with the wishes of both Mr. and Mrs. Hall.
