Hamblin, 40, of 647 Harrison street, Ionia became Ionia county’s ninth highway fatality of 1952 at 2:15 a.m. Sunday when his car crashed into a tree on M-21 1 ½ miles west of the Saranac intersection. Officers said Hamblin apparently was returning home from work in Grand Rapids and his car went directly off the pavement into a tree and was demolished. Deputy Sheriff Loyal Hodson said Hamblin apparently suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries and died before he could be removed from the scene. Hamblin was driving __ toward Ionia in a new automobile which had about 700 miles on its speedometer. The car was demolished. Hamblin had been a member of AC Sparkplug’s plant protection force in Ionia as well as Fisher Body while in Ionia and obtained a similar position with AC at their new warehouse in Grand Rapids sometime ago. He had been driving back and forth to work. Deputy Sheriff Hodson said the car tracks disclosed that Hamblin drove off the pavement on a straightaway and took out some guard rails before the car hit a huge tree 75 paces away. Hodson said the car was going at a high rate of speed. Coroner Dale Kauffman of Ionia said there would be no inquest. Hamblin was born June 2, 1912, in Centralia, Wash., moving to Ionia at the age of twelve. He had lived here continuously since then. Before accepting his present job in Grand Rapids 1 ½ years ago, he worked at the Ionia State hospital. he was a member of the Ionia Elks lodge. Services will be conducted at Myers funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. He leaves his wife, Patricia, three daughters, Judy, JoAnn and Sally, a son, Arthur; his mother, Mrs. Clarence Bolcom of Ionia; his father, George Hamblin of Oregon; and a brother, Henry, of Ionia.
