She was 81, and had lived in Ionia from 1945 until 1976. A native of Galesburg, Ill., she was the only child of Earl Tolbert and Emma Kent Tolbert. Toby had a number of careers, beginning with service as a Navy nurse in San Diego during World War II. She married Richard Hanson, and together they raised five children in Ionia. She taught herself automotive bookkeeping and worked for a number of dealerships in Ionia, including the family business, Dick Hanson motors. She later served as a financial officer with the Ionia Public School District, with responsibilities for the district’s investments. Toby is survived in Ionia by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Sarah Hanson. After her husband’s death in 1978, she moved to upstate New York. She married Fred W. Hamilton in 1984, and they lived for many years in Queensbury, N.Y. They moved to Haymarket, Va., in September of 2002. Toby was an exceptional bridge player, having learned the game from her parents as a child during the Depression. In Ionia, she became the first female commander of an American Legion Post in the country. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks, Glens Falls, N.Y., Lodge 81, and had a special fondness for chocolate. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Hanson, and by a son, Richard Hanson Jr. Survivors include her husband, Fred Hamilton of Haymarket and formerly of Queensbury; three daughters, Victoria Hanson of Hickory, N.C., Christine McKnight (husband James) of Schuylerville, N.Y., and Emilee Sabourin (husband Robert) of Midland; a son, Joseph Hanson (wife Teresa) of Haymarket; and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by two stepdaughters and three stepsons; Gail Hartigan of Brainerd, N.Y., Thomas Terry of Portland, Maine, William Terry (wife Judy) of Bowie, Md., Jeff Hamilton (wife Lynn) of Syracuse, N.Y., and Kim Livingston (husband Jeff) of Ellicott City, Md. Calling hours will be at 10 a.m., followed by services at 11 a.m., on Monday at the Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, in Queensbury. A private burial will follow.
