The Portland Observer of Sept. 1, says: John Hamilton, an aged and wealthy farmer living three miles east of Ionia on the Muir Road, was shot and instantly killed in his own house on Monday afternoon by his nephew, W. McKinney, a young man who had been at work for him in the earlier part of the season. McKinney’s father is wealthy and resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., and William being of a wild and desperate disposition, his father concluded it would be best to get him away from the city and if possible make a farmer of him. He therefore sent him to Hamilton’s to work on his farm. William worked up to within a few weeks ago, when he became dissatisfied and went to Muir to work in a saw mill. There was a balance of $18 due him from Hamilton, which it was understood was to be paid him when Hamilton sold his wheat or some other produce. Monday evening McKinney procured a livery rig and drove over to the farm. Entering the house he demanded his pay. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton were alone, and the latter told him they would pay him as agreed, when they sold their wheat. McKinney began using harsh and indecent language towards the old lady, and Mr. H. ordered him to leave the house. Hot words ensued and McKinney finally drew a revolver and fired two shots. The first missed Hamilton, but the second passed through his heart, killing him almost instantly. The murderer then returned to Muir, where he gave himself up to the officers and is now in jail.
