Hammon died at his home in this village Sunday morning, May 14th, after an illness of a week. He had been in poor health all winter, but was able to be down town a week before his death and took an automobile ride a week ago Sunday. He worked a little in the yard Monday and towards evening complained of being cold and of a pain in one of his lungs. This developed into pneumonia and his children were summoned home the last of the week, and after seeing and visiting with them, he seemed to let go of the thread of life and gradually sank into the final sleep. Deceased was born in Troy, Oakland County, Michigan, October 2, 1833, and in 1837 came to Lyons township, living on a farm, near the village, until about 1862. He was married to Sarah E. Haston? April 23, 1862 and they took up their home in the village of Lyons in the home in which he died, living here continuously. Two children, Mrs. Florence Steadman of Elsie, and Walter T. Hammon of Battle Creek, with the widow, survive, as also a sister Mrs. Jones. Mr. Hammon was quite prominent in village affairs, having held the office of treasurer for several terms and one year was treasurer of the township, and he was ever faithful in his trust. He was one of the oldest members of Lyons Lodge F.& A.M., having been made a Master Mason March 13, 1865. The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Wm Judd officiating, assisted by the following choir: Messrs. Balch and Hale and Mesdames Bradt and King. There was an abundance of floral pieces and flowers and the Masonic fraternity rendered their burial service at the grave. The pallbearers were W.C. Hawley, H.A. Ranger, Irving Greene and John Hale.
