Hammond, 61, of rural Ionia died Saturday afternoon in Butterworth Hospital, Grand Rapids. Born in Lyons June 1, 1924, he was the son of Floyd and Lona Wilder Hammond Sr. He attended schools in Ionia and graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1942. He was married to Margaret Kanouse July 4, 1942, in Pontiac. They made their home in Ronald Township. He entered the Army Corps of Engineers in 1943 and served in the Africa-Middle East Campaigns and then was transferred to the Southwest Pacific where he participated in the liberation of the Philippines. He was discharged from service in 1945. He resumed farming in Ronald Township and also worked at Lower Brothers, implement dealers, and also worked for several years at Michigan Reformatory. In 1959, the Hammonds moved to Coldwater and in 1966 to the Upper Peninsula, where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Watersmeet. The Hammonds returned to Ionia County in 1964. He was a member of Ewen Lodge No. 515, F.& A.M., and Bruce Crossing VFW Post No. 9345. Surviving are: his wife; two sons, Eugene of Houghton and Dale of the U.S. Navy in San Diego; four daughters, Linda Shazranoch, Carole Higgins of Belding, Mrs. Chris (Margaret) Rasmussen of Coldwater, and Mrs. John (Janet) Jackola of South Range, Mich.; 15 grandchildren; one great grandchild; his father Floyd Hammond Sr. of Woodard Lake; three brothers, Kenneth of Ionia, Louis of Albuquerque, N.M., and Milton of Woodard Lake. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1p.m. from Shiloh Community Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Burial will be in Woodard Lake Cemetery. The family will be at Leddick Funeral Home Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial for Shiloh Community Church has been established in care of the funeral home.
