Hamp, 80, of Lake Odessa died Friday morning at Sparrow hospital in Lansing following an extended illness. Born August 18, 1893, in Gaines township, Kent county, he was the son of Robert and Permelia Meyers Hamp and came to Lake Odessa in 1917. He was a veteran of World War I having served with the army. August 14, 1918 he was married to Ila Shumway at Lake Odessa and she died May 6, 1968. They resided on a farm near Lake Odessa until his retirement in 1946. They then moved into Lake Odessa where he was employed by Lake Odessa Canning company 12 years, retiring in 1958. He was a member of Central United Memorial church of Lake Odessa, the LaVern Demaray post of American Legion and Lakeside barracks of World War I. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Bopp of Grand Ledge and Mrs. Ruth Courtney of Hastings; three sons, Roger of Lake Odessa, Charles Donald of Grand Ledge and Robert of Saranac; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Pickens-Koops funeral chapel in Lake Odessa. Rev. Marvin Zimmerman will officiate and interment will be at Lakeside cemetery.
