They observed their 75th wedding anniversary on March 5. Mr. Hanchett died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. D. Sherd in Bushnell township, Montcalm county following an attack of influenza. He was 97 and one of the few remaining Civil War veterans in Western Michigan. The wife, who was also ill, has suffered a relapse and lies critically ill. She has not been informed of her husband’s death. Mr. Hanchett served thru the Civil War with Company D of the Ninth Michigan Infantry. In his company were a number of volunteers from Lyons and Portland vicinities. Among the aged veteran’s survivors are 23 great grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held Saturday afternoon. Burial will be in the Palo cemetery.
