The funeral for Mrs. Mary Hancock was held this afternoon at the home of her brother, William Steele, 522 East Washington street, Rev. M.L. Marshall conducting the service. The music was by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. G.M. Phelps. Bearers were John Steele of Detroit, Frank Carten, George Dewey, M.M. McGeary, F.M. Kidd and B.R. Ely. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. The clerks from Carten’s stores, where she has long been employed, attended the funeral in a body. Mrs. Hancock was Mary Margaret Steele, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Steele. She was born in St. Catherine, Ontario, and passed her girlhood there. She was about nineteen years old when she came to Michigan and settled at Spring Lake with her brother William. She was married there to William Hancock, and they lived at Spring Lake or at Grand Haven until his death, twenty-nine years ago. He was killed by a freight train accident while working in the north Michigan lumber camp owned by William Steele. After his death Mrs. Hancock remained in Spring Lake until about fifteen years ago, when she came to Ionia, where she lived continuously until her death. She was taken ill at Christmas and has been confined to her bed ever since, death coming last Friday afternoon at 2:45. Of the seven children in her parents’ family only two brothers survive: William of this city and James of Chicago. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, and belonged also to Queen Esther chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
