She had just celebrated her 90th birthday last year with many friends and family at a reception in her honor in Portland. Betty was a very special mother and grandmother, and we will miss her every day. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John S. Hancock, and she is survived by her daughters, Linda (Greg) Marks of Miami, FL., Mary Beth (Steve) Hathaway of Grosse Point Farms, MI, Patty (Rick) Miller of Laingsburg, MI, honorary daughter, Louise (Brad) Foltz of Portland; grandchildren, Nicholas Hathaway, Sean Marks, Hayley Marks and honorary grandchildren, Clay (Faith) and Derek (Erin) Foltz; and dear friends Mary Lour Tannery and Blanche Powell. Betty was born on March 14, 1920, the daughter of Frank and Stella Hines of Detroit, Michigan, where she grew up. She attended Visitation High School in Detroit and worked for General Motors in the Fisher Building until marrying Dr. John S. Hancock and moving to Portland. John Hancock was an optometrist in Portland until his death in 1962. Betty raised her three daughters, working first at Maynard-Allen State Bank and then as the District Court Recorder in Ionia County and Secretary to Judge Ronald Van Buren and Judge James Ward until her retirement in 1986. Betty was an avid reader and was well known at the Portland Public Library. She was especially proud of her grandchildren. Betty will forever be in our hearts as we remember how courageously and lovingly she raised her three daughters alone. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2011 at St; Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. Larry King presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery.
