September 13, 1944 EDSEL E. HANEY LISTED AS DEAD S/Sgt. Edsel E.Haney, reported missing in action since March 29, 1944, had officially been listed as dead by the war department. He was born in Lake Odessa, September 23, 1919, and spent his early childhood and attended grade school here but completed High school in Ionia with the class of 1939. He was associated with his father the late Ed Haney in the mail hauling contracts and with the Frank's five and ten cent stores as field man for the district stores and assistant manager of the Ionia store. On June 15, 1941, he was married to Miss Mildred Friend of Crystal and resided at Carson City while he was manager of the Frank store there. He entered service February 6, 1943, and received his Army Air-Force training which he completed at Kearney, Neb., and left for overseas service in December, 1943. Sergeant Haney was stationed with the 8th Air Force in Enland and served as a tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was believed to have completed 15 missions when reported missing. Later reports were that the crew was forced to bail out from its burning plane and the rest of the crew was reported prisoners of war and have been returned to the States. Mrs. Haney was presented the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf clusters, awarded her husband at a ceremony at Selfridge Field on December 2, 1944. Surviving besides the widow, is a daughter Amanda Lou who resides with her mother in Grand Rapids, and a sister Mrs.Roy Erb, Lake Odessa.
