One to answer the call was a veteran who has served his country in the Civil war, while the other, while not being a resident of this city at the time of her death, spent her girlhood days in this city and was very well known and loved by all who remembered her acquaintance. George Hanks, aged 81 years, died at his home in Smyrna, Sunday afternoon at about three o'clock, following an illness of about six weeks and which was caused by neuralgia of the heart. Mr. Hanks was born in Oakland county in 1843 and came to this section of the country when he was but four years of age, residing here continuously ever since with the exception of the time served in the Civil war. He was a member of Co. A. 25th Michigan Infantry and a member of Dan S. Root Post, G. A. R. of this city, the numbers of which attended his funeral in a body. Mr. Hanks is survived by his widow, two foster-daughters, Mrs. Ray Ring of this city and Mrs. Maude Wilson, of California, three sisters, Mrs. Trum Currie, Mrs. Charles Brink and Mrs. Chris Choate, also two brothers Eli and Orin Hanks, all either in or near this city. Funeral services were held this Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Maccabee hall at Smyrna. Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating and burial was in Smyrna cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by the legion of friends who had known Mr. Hanks for many years and who held him in high esteem and a neighbor, friend and citizen.
