She passed away at the Laurels of Kent nursing home in Lowell where she was a resident for the past two and one half years. She was born on March 4, 1914 in Lowell, the daughter of George and Effie (Boomer) Emelander. She married George E. Hanline on Dec. 18, 1932. They were married for 55 years prior to his death. During their life together they owned and operated the Hilltop Grill from 1954 to 1972. Susie was well known for her delicious fresh-baked pies. After the closing of the Hilltop Grill, she became an employee of the Sessions Restaurant, as she enjoyed the “hustle and bustle” of the restaurant world. She worked there for several years, always meeting the customers, new or old, with a smile. She enjoyed working in her flower beds, arranging flowers for both indoor and outdoor display; an earlier influence from her work experience at the Smith Greenhouse and Halstead Flower Shop. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Ionia since 1932. She loved being involved with many of the church activities and committees. She participated as a Deaconess for several years. For those of us who knew and loved her, we knew her as a woman devoted to her Christian faith. She was always “ready and willing” to lend a helping hand to those who needed her. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Masengale of Ionia; her sister, Anna Wetherbee of Ionia; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; daughter Edna Snell; sons-in-law, Ed Snell and Don Masengale; five brothers, Harry, Jake, Dowie, Tony and Jack (George) Emelander; and two sisters, Jessie Thomas and Jennie Matkoskie. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at the First Christian Church, 130 E. Washington St., Ionia. Interment will follow in Balcom Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Friday at the Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund or to Alzheimers Research in memory of Susie Hanline. Arrangements are entrusted to the Cook Funeral Home, Ionia.
