The daughter of Charles Spencer and Gladys May Hamilton Cowles, she was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Belding. After graduating high school, Betty served her country during World War II as a pharmacist’s mate third class with the U.S. Navy. On July 5, 1947, she married James L. Hansen. Betty worked for many years as a pharmacy clerk at Meijer. She was a longtime member of First Congregational Church in Greenville, was active with the Women’s Fellowship circles at the church and also participated in many activities with the Greenville Area Senior Center, as well as volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James L. Hansen; and brother, Charles Richard Cowles. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Martin Engle, Terri and Scott Luce, all of Greenville; sister, Annabelle and Claude Cox of Michigan Center; siblings-in-law, Glenna Cowles of Belding, Hazel and Joseph Hansen; five grandchildren, Jason and Ronda Engle of Lowell, Erin Engle, Erik Engle, Andrew Luce, Ellie Luce, all of Greenville; two great grandsons; Austin and Caden Engle, both of Lowell; special friends, Joe and Sue Muns of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 5 p.m. Sunday at Brown-Teman & Christiansen Funeral Home, 511 S. Franklin St., Greenville, with the Rev. Jerry Jones, pastor of First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation is one hour prior to services on Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Michigan Parkinson’s Foundation or the American Lung Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
