Jan. 30, 2021 DAVID FREGEAU HANSON, age 91, of Axdale Acres, Ionia, Michigan, died January 26, 2021 at Spectrum United Hospital in Greenville, Michigan, from complications following abdominal surgery. He was born March 4, 1930 in Alma, Michigan to Walter Peter and Coila Marie (Anderson) Hanson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Sarah Jane (Sykes) Hanson and his children Ann Elisabeth Hanson of Ionia and Ann Arbor, and Peter Scott (Cindy) Hanson of Greenville. His family includes grandsons Daniel (Trista) Hanson, Scott Hanson, Timothy (Kaitlyn) Hanson and great-grandchildren Penelope, Hollyn and David. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and brothers Richard, Philip, and Hugh Hanson. He is also survived by six beloved cats. David graduated from Ionia High School in 1948 and from the University of Michigan in 1952. He achieved his Master of Education from Michigan State University in 1966 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Education from Madonna University in 1994. His military career included Army ROTC, Army Enlisted Reserves, and Army service in the Korean War as First Lieutenant commanding the lead M-46 heavy tank platoon during operations in the Iron Triangle. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and his Army Company was awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation for bravery and heroism. His lifelong work as an educator included teaching at Belding and Pewamo High Schools, principal at Pewamo-Westphalia High School, and more than 40 years working for the State of Michigan in education. He was a life member of the VFW, Sheridan; Ionia County Hunting and Fishing Club; and led monthly Class of '48 lunches for twenty years. He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Ionia, serving many years as an elder. Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 12 PM with Visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service. The Funeral will be Livestreamed via Lake Funeral Home's Facebook page. Public Interment with Military Honors will be at Easton Cemetery at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for First Presbyterian Church, Ionia has been established in the name of David Fregeau Hanson. More information is available at www.1stpreschurchionia.com.
