Mr. Harden’s life was an eventful one. When a mere lad, he drove on the tow path of the Erie Canal and made the slow, tedious trip with his parents to Michigan, in 1866, where they first settled in Ionia, west of Hubbardston, later going to southeast North Shade. Besides helping clear and till the land with his father and brothers, Luke worked in the lumber woods several years and when yet a very young man was promoted to river boss, the logs being run down Fish Creek to the mills in Muir, Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. In August, 1874, he was married to Hannah Lynch of North Shade, to which union was born one son William, who departed this life when a young man. After farming for a few years, Mr. and Mrs. Harden ran a hotel in Hubbardston for quite a while, finally settling on the old Lynch homestead one and one-half miles south of North Shade Center, where they built up a fine home and where they celebrated their golden wedding in 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Harden took Terrence Lynch when he was a baby of one year and raised him as a son and who, with his family, is left to mourn their departure. They also cared for the aged mother of Mrs. Harden for many years and their home was always noted for its genial hospitality. Mrs. Harden departed this life in March, 1925, and two weeks later the fine farmhouse which had been their home more than a quarter of a century burned. Since that time Mr. Harden has been in failing health and was confined to his bed for three months, accepting death in the calm, cheerful way he accepted all his other misfortunes. His presence among his old friends will be sadly missed for his greeting was always cheering and hearty. The funeral was held Saturday, June 11, in St. Mary’s church, Carson City, Rev. F. O’Toole celebrating the funeral mass and Rev. Fr. O Connell, an old friend, preaching the sermon. Interment was in the Hubbardston Catholic cemetery beside the bodies of his wife and son. Two brothers of the deceased, William of this place, and Thomas of Idaho, besides numerous nieces and nephews, are left.
