May 3, 2016 CATHALEEN HARDY 1917 - 2016 Cathaleen Hardy, 99, of Saranac went home to be with her Lord on Monday, April 25. She was born in Belding on March 27, 1917 to Gregory and Laura Carlsen Miller. After her graduations from Coral High School and County Normal School to become a teacher, she began a teaching career that spanned 36 years, primarily in the Ada Elementary School of the Forest Hills School District. During that time, Cathaleen completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Central Michigan University. She retired in 1976. Upon retirements she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Kent Intermediate School District. Cathaleen married Edward Carpenter in 1939 in Greenville, Michigan. they had two children, Barbara and Richard. Edward was killed at work Sept. 11, 1943. In June 1950, Cathaleen married George Hardy. He preceded her in death February 1995. Preceding Cathaleen's death were those of her parents; husbands; one sister; son Richard Carpenter; step-daughter Kay Cardinal; one granddaughter, Kristen Dawdy; one step- granddaughter, Terry Hardy; and one step-great-grandson, Brandon Sobezak. Cathaleen is survived by one daughter, Barbara (John) Lonas of Knoxville, Tennessee; one step-son James (Peggy) Hardy of Saranac; several grandchildren; step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a special brother-in-law, Robert Hardy. A private funeral service was held at Saranac Community Church where she was a member, for immediate family only. Burial was in Trufant Cemetery. Arrangements by lake Funeral Home in Saranac.
