He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cheryl (Rudolph) Harkness; his children, Kimberly (Joe) Butler, Andrea (Mike) Wood; his grandchildren, Ty and Trevor Wood. He is also survived by his father, Ed Harkness, sister Sue Ann (Gary) Edlin of Grand Ledge, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Marie (Popendick) Harkness. John served in the Army Reserves for six years. He was a graduate of Ferris State University’s Architectural Program in 1969, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Chi. John worked for his father at Specialty Block for many years and went on to manage the company after it was sold. He owned and operated CJ Cap & Trailer for 15 years before he retired in 2004. He was a life member of the Western Michigan Rifle and Pistol Club and other organizations. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. John was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He gave us many years of laughs and wonderful memories. There will be a graveside funeral held at Balcom Cemetery, Tuesday, June 7, at 2 p.m. for family and close friends.
