She was born at her family home on September 22, 1919, the daughter of Myra Popendick. August 31 would have been the 65th anniversary of her marriage to Edgar, her loving husband. They spent many happy years going to the cottage at Loon Lake, the cabin in Canada, special family outings and traveling together to England, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Marie dearly loved playing her violin as a teenager in "Singing Strings," and graduated from Cedar Lake Academy in 1937. She proudly worked in the offices of Ionia Reed, Stafford Johnson and secretary for Specialty Block Co. Surviving are her husband, Edgar; daughter, Sue (Gary) Edlin; son John (Cheryl) Harkness; grandchildren, Jeff (Karen) Edlin, Christopher Edlin, Kimberly (Joe) Butler, and Andrea (Mike) Wood. Marie especially loved visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Cameron, Lauren, Nathan and Ty Michael; her sister, Naomi Phelps of Ionia; brother-in-law, Frank Harkness (Frances) of Ludington and sister-in-law, Sally Mankin of Belding. Marie's creative talents, kindness and friendship were well known by many dear friends as a member of "China Bells" painting group, the Ionia Art Guild, Literary Club, First Presbyterian Church, Ionia Historical Society and the election board for Ionia Township. She was a proud member of the Ionia Eastern Star. Her artistic talents were also a part of her children's lives as she volunteered with Ionia Band Boosters, made snacks for Ionia 4-H Saddle Club and was Brownie Leader for 14 energetic girls at Jefferson School. Funeral arrangements are being made by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home in Ionia for Wednesday, June 9. Visitation times will be announced later. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to Ionia First Presbyterian Church, Ionia Literary Club or Ionia Historical Society.
