He was born in Woodland on May 17, 1926, to Howard and Minnie Harper. In 1949, he married Betty Marie LaReau, and they remained married until her death in 2002. Arden served his country in the United States Army and fought in Europe during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from Michigan State College (University), then continued his education at University of Michigan where he earned his master's degree in education, servicing as a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent of schools. For many years after retiring he worked as a math instructor and tutor at Lansing Community College and Lake-Sumpter Community College in Florida. Arden enjoyed family vacations, reading and writing, following Michigan sports teams (especially the Detroit Tigers) and time spent with his family. Arden and Betty lived in The Villages, Florida, for several years until her death. He later married Patricia Burkhardt in 2003, and they moved to The Villages, then to Murfreesboro, TN. Arden is survived by his wife, Patricia; his three children, Deborah Harper of Chugiak, AK, Shelley Stevens (Greg) of Mt. Pleasant, and Alan Harper of Caledonia; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren-- Derek Gordon (Renee) and their sons Tyler and Adam of Howell, Darice Ackerson-Gordon and her daughter, Molly of Chugiak, AK, Dennae Hodges (Richard) and their sons Dustin, Hunter, and Cannon from Owensboro, KY, Amorena Wojciakowski (Mike) of Grand Rapids, and their children Cecilia, Julia and Collin, Ashley Newman (Chris) of Pardeeville, WI, and Seth Newman (Megan) of East Lansing. Burial has taken place at the Woodland Memorial Park near Woodland. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
