Bishop, in this place, at the age of 75 years, one month and eighteen days. In the spring of 1861 he enlisted as a private in the 22d regiment of New York volunteer infantry. He was twice wounded, once by a bullet in the neck and once by a bayonet wound in the chest. He was discharged with his regiment at the expiration of his term of service as Orderly Sergeant of his company. A few years after the war he went to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and engaged in the iron business which he learned thoroughly and became an expert furnace man. He managed furnaces in the Upper Peninsula, also in Missouri, and built and put in operation two in Tennessee. He retired from active business about eight years ago to enjoy a well earned competence. He was an honest man, his word being as good as his bond; generous when generosity was due; a good citizen whose citizenship would be valuable to any community. He was the type of a man who did things and left his impress upon any enterprise that he undertook. The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Bishop Friday morning, December 1, at 10 o’clock, Rev. Wm. Mitchell officiating. His remains were taken to Hubbardston for interment in the west side cemetery.
