Harris, 91, of Belding died Wednesday morning January 7, 2009 at Metron of Belding Nursing Home. Carl was born on February 18, 1917 in Wallin, Michigan the son of Percy and Crystal Harris Swift. The Harris Family moved to the south of Ionia when Carl was a young boy. He attended Ionia Public Schools. Carl proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. With the exception of his time spent in the Army, Carl had worked as a electrician/millwright at Extruded Metals in Belding from August of 1939 until his retirement on March 1, 1979. He was married on July 4, 1936 to Grace Benedict. He and Grace in earlier years had enjoyed camping all around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and later spent their summers at the campground on Merrill Lake. Carl enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league in Belding for many years. He also enjoyed golfing with friends and watching golf on television. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 203 of Belding where he had served as post commander, district commander and traveled to two national conventions in Boston and New Orleans. For many years Carl had served as the Belding area representative on the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund of Ionia County. He was always glad to be able to help his fellow veterans. Carl was preceded by his parents, his wife Grace in 1999, a son David in 2006, two brothers William and L.D. " Pat" and two sisters; Countess and Myrtle and one great-great grandson Devin. He is survived by his sons and daughter in laws; Carl and Betty Harris of Florida, William and Joy Harris of Belding and Casey and Sandy Bunce of Florida. Carl is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Funeral and committal services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Private interment will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Legion Post 203 or the Belding Museum.
