State police said two cars collided at the intersection of Divine and David highways with one man killed and five other persons injured, three of them seriously. Occupants of both cars lived on Divine highway and were not too far from their homes. Dead: William Harris, 74, route one, Pewamo. Seriously injured – Mathias I. Schrauben, 54, Mary Ellen Schrauben, 5, and Comelia Schrauben, 45. Slightly injured – Carl Schrauben, 9, and Kenneth Schrauben, 12 Coroner Neil Phelps said Harris died almost instantly of head and internal injuries about 11:45. Members of the Schrauben family were brought to the Ionia County Memorial hospital by ambulance. Mathias Schrauben was reported to have suffered lacerations of the head, possible broken right leg and bruised chest. His wife Comelia had lacerations of the head and possible broken ribs. Their daughter Mary Ellen had a skull fracture and fracture of the left shoulder. Carl and Kenneth were treated for minor injuries. At noon Monday Mary Ellen Schrauben was reported by hospital officials as in critical condition. Mr. and Mrs. Schrauben were listed as being good. Ronald Van Buren, Ionia county prosecuting attorney, who was called to view the cars and body before they were moved, said an autopsy would be held Monday morning at Neller funeral home in Portland. State police said the Schrauben car apparently was traveling west on David highway and failed to stop as it approached Devine highway. The Schrauben car hit the Harris car in the center of the side and jammed it into a utility pole at the northwest corner of the intersection. Harris had been a businessman at Maple Corners more than 30 years. Coroner Phelps stated Monday morning following an autopsy by Dr. C.C. Black of Lansing, cause of death was due to severe and acute internal injuries. Harris had operated a corner grocery store and gasoline station at Maple corners on Divine highway for several years. He was enroute home at the time of the collision and only one mile from his destination. The first highway fatality in Ionia county this year was one day previous to the first one last year. Harris was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion in Portland and the Forty and Eight club of Lansing. He is survived by one brother, Norman Harris of Grand Rapids, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Neller funeral home in Portland with the Rev. Robert Treat officiating.
