D. Harroun, one of the very earliest pioneers of this section of the county, died in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Hecox in Greenville Monday, aged 95 years. The deceased came to this locality from New York state in 1836 and was active in helping to clear up and build up from the virgin forests and lay the foundation for the present improvements we now enjoy. He was a brother of the late G. V. Harroun of this city. Mr. Harroun purchased 80 acres of land in Montcalm county, the tract costing him $175. At present it is the site of the Pere Marquette depot. He assisted in organizing the first bank in the county; and knowing the Indian language, he made himself useful in transacting a great deal of business with the various tribes of Western Michigan.
