The Ionia Standard, Friday, November 12, 1897

James P. Hart was born in Saratoga Co., New York, August 10th, 1833.  His 
parents moved to Orleans Co. in the same state, where his boyhood and young 
manhood years were spent, and where, on Oct. 31, 1855, he was married to Emily 
Swan.  Three children blessed this union: Mrs. Robert Kane of Charlevoix, 
Clarence R. Hart of Chicago, and Alvan L. Hart of Burlington, Iowa.  He died 
at his home in Chicago on Oct. 31, the forty-second anniversary of his 
marriage.  

From 1867 to 1890 he was a resident of Ionia, and for several years was deacon 
of the Baptist church, and leader of the choir.  He lived a quiet and 
unobtrusive life, and was honest and conscientious in all business 
transactions, much beloved in his own immediate family, and highly respected 
by a large circle of more remote relatives and acquaintances.

Besides his wife and children, he leaves to mourn his death two brothers, 
Samuel R. and Alvan P. Hart of Chicago, and two sisters, Mrs. F. H. Parker of 
Eaton Rapids, and Mrs. Orry Waterbury of this city.

Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Orry Waterbury 
Wednesday p.m., Nov. 3rd.  Rev. E. M. Jeffers, pastor of the Baptist church 
read impressively appropriate selections of scripture and offered prayer.  The 
ladies quartette, Misses Hattie McMullen, Winnie Hearsey, Kate Benedict and 
Grace Allured, sang sweetly words which gave heavenly comfort to the 
mourners.  Interment in Oak Hill cemetery in the family burial lot.
