BENJAMIN HARTER Death Claims Another of Ionia's Early Pioneers. Mrs. Sarah Harter, widow of the late Benjamin Harter, died at 4 o'clock Saturday morning at the age of 77 years. Mr. Harter died Nov. 14, 1890. They were married in 1849, two years after he came to Ionia to become one of its most active business men, and since his death Mrs. Harter has continued to reside at the old home, on High street. Her condition has been critical for several days and her two surviving daughters, Mrs. Avery and Mrs. Rogers, were with her a the time of her death. In her passing away Ionia loses one more if its earliest pioneers, and a good Christian woman who has always been identified among its most prominent citizens, one who has seen Ionia grow from its infancy. She was greatly respected by all. The funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Harter were quite largely attended from the family residence Tuesday afternoon, the officiating clergyman being Rev. Martin, of the First Baptist church. The remains were carried to the grave in Highland Park cemetery by Gilbert S. Yates, John A. Sessions, Edward Merriett and Frank H. Harter. Among those who attended the funeral from out of the city were Mrs. Davis, a grand-daughter, of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Strong, of Kalamazoo, and Messrs. Brayton and Hitchcock, of Hubbardston.
